Tasks are tackled with relative ease, our energy levels are right up, no problem seems too great, and everything seems to constantly fall into place. The problem is that the opposite is also true. A feeling of "low or no motivation" leads to failure to complete tasks, low energy levels, all problems seem incredibly hard to overcome and everything seems to be going wrong!

Unfortunately, much of the motivation in the world comes in the form of fear - the fear of negative consequences. For example, you will see most students completing their homework (or at least attempting to complete it) for fear of what will happen to them if they don't. They may be embarrassed in class, they may be grounded by their parents, they may fear falling behind everyone else, or they may fear appearing stupid. It could be many things - but it is all fear-based motivation. It's only natural - this type of motivation has been around since the dawn of time.

If there was no deadline and no consequence for not handing a paper in on time, would we ever even hand it in? Would we even start the stinking paper? Would anyone ever do anything they didn't want to do?

Fear of negative consequences (i.e. negative motivation) is important in the world. We need to have rules and social conventions. We need to treat each other with respect. But that doesn't mean you should operate your entire life this way. There is more to life than just constantly doing what everyone wants so that they (and society) will be happy with you. That's not a joyful life experience.

Acting only out of fear of consequences will not lead you to a positive and happy life. It will lead to "existing" - and existing is not the level of motivation you will need to take you to where you really want to go - all the way to the top (of whatever it is you want to do)!

Want to find real motivation? Act only out of possibility. Never act out of fear. Act out of the possibility of what may come from doing what you're doing. If you're doing homework, ask yourself what the possibility may be. Is the possibility that you learn something new? Is the possibility that you are smarter than you were before? Is the possibility that you are closer to your ambition of a good grade? Is the possibility that you are one step closer to College? What is your possibility? Every act has a possibility. Find yours and you will have found your true motivation. The power of possibility always crushes the fear of negative consequences - if you harness it correctly.

The answer to finding motivation is actually simple. Whenever you are doing something and don't feel motivated simply ask yourself "What is the possibility here? What positive outcome is going to occur from this?" If you can't find a simple possibility (like I could learn something new, I could earn some money which I can spend on something important to me, I'm a step closer to something I really want to achieve) then you really aren't searching hard enough. When you think things like "There is no point trying because I will only fail" or "I'm too lazy to start that assignment" it links directly to what actions you take. But in this case your actions will be doing nothing! So start taking notice of what you say to yourself and change it. When a negative thoughts pops in counter it with a positive one. If you think you can't tell yourself you definitely can! It really does make all the difference.

Tip Two. Visualize yourself taking action and having success. We all know that the best athletes in the world visualize themselves achieving great things, so you can do it too! Think about yourself doing all your homework, getting your assignments in on time and acing the next test or exam. Then visualize what it feels like to achieve this. Do this as many times as required to start really believing it will happen!

Tip Three. Break up tasks into tiny bite size chunks. Stop looking at what you need to complete as one big thing. It's not one big thing! It's lots of tiny little things! Start chopping up your tasks into tiny little action steps. Complete a worksheet, attend a class, read a chapter of your text book - they are all little chunks that lead to something much bigger. Take little baby steps each day and by the end of the week you will have achieved a lot. That's the truth. Do 30 minutes study a day and you have done 3 hours study in a week. Do that every week and you have done 150 hours of study. But it all starts with 30 minutes today!

Tip Four. Surround yourself with study buddies. If you can find others who are experiencing similar things to you there is no doubt it will help calm you down and see that you are not alone. But the best part is that study buddies will give you their own words of wisdom and tips about how to get the work done (not to mention hold you accountable for getting it done!) It is highly motivating when you team up with others and make a commitment to getting the task done.

Tip Five. Remind yourself that you're closer to the end that you've ever been. One of the biggest challenges for students is not being able to see the light at the end of the tunnel. You've been studying and working hard for years and you still have a few years ahead of you. You've done mountains of work in your lifetime but more work just keeps piling up. It's relentless! Well, you need to take a deep breath. Every day brings you closer to the end - of your studying days! Every time you study for an hour or hand in an assignment or complete a test you have moved forward. You won't have to do that again and you've knocked down one obstacle in your way. Every action you take brings you closer to your destination. The light at the end of the tunnel is coming.

Do you remember 23? You have confidence and the naivet to believe that you can accomplish anything. It could be to start a job, you don't yet look at it as a career, simply a new start. Careers are daunting and infer long-term commitments. Jobs are new beginnings that are filled with new opportunities and experiences. There is no mortgage, family or obligations that lock you into a specific location - the world is your oyster. So you might choose to hike the Appalachian Trail or as our eldest son has pondered, travel across the country with no destination, just to see everything along the way, sell the car on the other coast and then figure it out. Is it any wonder that 23 year olds are one of the two happiest ages? They are carefree and ready for every new encounter before them.

For anyone who is not yet 69, can you think why they are happy? If you happen to be 69 and beyond, don't you agree? Those aged 68 underestimate their future happiness by 4.5 percent as stated by a study by the Centre for Economic Performance at the London School of Economics. It appears counter intuitive that happiness is decided by the way people "underestimate their future happiness". Yet this certainly validates why 69 is happier - there aren't as many years to forecast forward or headaches. If you love to procrastinate then these are four words you will be very familiar with: "I'll do it tomorrow." While it's true these four words may actually comfort you as you say them to yourself- knowing full well that a critical assignment date draws closer or your bedroom becomes messier and messier or you have precious little time left to study for that important exam - they also create a major problem. A major problem that could warp into a major meltdown! And major meltdowns are never pretty. They normally end in us slumping to the ground in agony screeching like the wicked witch from the Wizard of Oz, "what a world, what a world, what a world" or in the case of the scarecrow, "If I only had a brain!"

The good news is you probably do have a brain after all! What a relief. The big problem is, however, that while the words "I'll do it tomorrow" may comfort you and give you a sense of relief that everything be will be OK or a hope about what tomorrow may bring, they are also the bane of your entire existence! They torture you. They tease you. They make you think that when you wake up in the morning you will be super-motivated and super-pumped to tackle a task that yesterday seemed completely impossible. But not today! Today (being tomorrow) you know all the answers and have all the confidence in the world and all the obstacles that stopped you from starting the task yesterday are now gone aren't they? Well aren't they? Unfortunately the answer is no, because nothing at all has changed! Everything is the same. Except that today is the day! Things are going to happen! Angels are going to fly! The earth is going to shake! OK well maybe not, but you are going to do some work you have been putting off anyway.

Why Can't I Just Stop?

Believe it or not procrastination has a purpose and creates something that people actually enjoy (for reasons way too deep to discuss today - drama! Procrastination creates panic. It creates a sense of urgency. It creates excitement and adventure. Someone asked me to do something but I'm not doing it, what will happen to me? Let's find out after this commercial break.

The 'truth' in all of this is simply that postponing anything for a day or two isn't really that big of a deal at all - so don't fret if that's all you do in this situation. The big problem is when one day becomes two days, two days becomes four days, four days becomes a week, one week becomes a fortnight, a fortnight becomes a month and then a month becomes a year. This trend can literally last forever. Unless of course your exam is today and you didn't study! Then procrastination isn't your issue anymore anyway - your bleak future after failing is! Also figuring out who to blame will be another thing you will need to work out.

Get Out Of Your Own Way

On objective reflection, this is a horrible approach to anything in life, particularly your studies. Worse still, you will get found out if you try to continue this behavior after high school because University and College (and life in general) takes no prisoners when it comes to last-minute work. Do it at your own risk - you will (no doubt about it) pay the price. Believe me, we know. We've been there. Learn from us. So, what can you do about it?

Instead, just take a moment and think about it. Think about what the payoff is for you. Think about what it is that reinforces why you should procrastinate. There has to be a payoff. It is because you want to be in control - even if that means failing? Is it because you fear what your friends will think if you get your work done and act like a good student? In other words, do you improve yourself each day in order to become the person you need to be in order to achieve the goal you want to achieve - or do you change nothing and do nothing and just hope everything will somehow work out for the best? Remember, be honest!

Achieving a goal is a process not an event. The problem is that people don't like processes - we like events! You see, we like to get an A+ on our Maths test, but we don't want to do the study and homework required (i.e. the process) to get the A+, we just want the event - the great score! All of the homework, the tests, the exams and the assignments required to get good grades can really break the back of even a student with the best intentions!

The process of passing school is hard, the process of being an A+ student is even harder. However, the events along the way, such as getting a good grade on a test, or getting a good report card, or getting into the College of your choice, are the enjoyable "events" (i.e. the rewards) for going through the process.

This is a significant distinction in terms of goal setting and goal achievement. Keeping in mind that because we love events and not processes, it stands to reason that we will struggle to achieve the goals we set for ourselves. Why? Well we don't want to go through the hard yards to make it happen. We just want the event - the goal being achieved! Make sense doesn't it?

So, if you are going to set a goal, you really need to understand what process you are going to have to go through to achieve it and make sure you are committed to it. The event is secondary; the process is what you are really committing yourself to. You must ask yourself, "What actions will I have to take every day to go through the process? Who will I need to be to go through the process?" If you can't answer that, you won't be able to achieve the goal you have set.

Goals don't just happen. They are clearly defined and then deliberately worked towards. You create an event (an A+ in Maths) and then you have to go through the process to get there. Focus on the process and the event will happen. Focus on the event (like everyone wants to) and nothing will happen. The choice is yours!

While both of these scenarios are driven by ambition and motivation, the inspiration comes from the latter; that feeling, the internal drive to want to do something, be something, and achieve more.
